Article Abstract:

The general assumption that poor compliance with hand hygiene is the result of staff attitudes and behavior is refuted and it is suggested that recommended practice standards are unrealistic. The nursing profession might find an improvement in overall standards by developing a pragmatic model based on a hierarchy of interventions.
