Structurally unsound
Article Abstract:
The proposed new pay structure for nurses has three salary scales instead of one. Nurses, health visitors and midwives will be on one scale, doctors and dentists on another and all other hospital staff will be on the third scale. Other specialists, such as speech therapists, can choose whether to join the nurses scale. Nurses will be put into three groups; qualified nurses, expert nurses and nurse consultants. Pay increments will be awarded according to performance. However, the plans are not definite and the unions can negotiate changes until September 1999.

Nice work if you can get it
Article Abstract:
The UK government's 'Making a Difference' nursing strategy indicates that the new nurse consultant post, which will come into effect in Apr 2000, will carry a maximum salary of around 40,000 pounds sterling. The starting salary for a nurse consultant will be 27,000 pounds sterling, compared with 47,354 pounds sterling for a medical consultant. The average salary for the UK's 22,000 medical consultants is around 60,000 pounds sterling. This discrepancy has been criticized by the Community Practitioners' and Health Visitors' Association.
