Tally? No!

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom National Health Service (NHS) plans to publish league tables for hospitals based on factors such as waiting lists and response times of ambulances, in June 1994, a move which is being opposed by nursing unions. Nurses argue it may be demoralising to work under stress in deprived areas and be rewarded with a low rating, and they also note that readmissions and infections acquired in hospitals are not included in the criteria for 'good' hospitals. Critics also argue that patients cannot easily choose their hospitals, so the tables will not improve patient choice.

A welcome step

Article Abstract:

Revised United Kingdom Central Council guidelines state that HIV/AIDS diagnosed nurses should not lose their jobs automatically. Only those involved in invasive procedures with sharp instruments should be redeployed. The new guidelines reflect the Department of Health's recommendations. However, some consider the guidelines would prevent discrimination more effectively if they were legally enforced.
