Taming the clot-buster tPA

Article Abstract:

Studies have found that strokes treated with tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) can help dissolve blood clots and improve outcome, but tPA can also increase the risk of hemorrhage and cause other deleterious effects. Scientists have developed a new approach that reduces the risk of intracranial bleeding and minimizes other deleterious effects of tPA on animal models by administering a hexapeptide (EEIIMD) that spans a region of plasminogen activator inhibitor type (PAI-1) which interferes with a part of tPA signaling that is not involved in clot-busting activity.

Inducible nitric oxide synthase stimulates dopaminergic neurodegeneration in the MPTP model of Parkinson disease

Article Abstract:

Drugs that inhibit the inducible form of nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) may be beneficial in treating Parkinson's disease. Giving the neurotoxin MPTP to mice increases the production of iNOS and causes neurodegeneration in the substantia nigra.

Catching bird flu in a droplet

Article Abstract:

The article presents a microfluidic platform, which could find the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus H5N1 in a throat swab sample by applying magnetic forces to manipulate a free droplet containing superparamagnetic particles.
