Rx for Workers' Comp

Article Abstract:

Physicians control a large portion of an insurer's liability. Cost containment efforts have not addressed the area of diagnosis. Physicians are caught between the patient, attorneys, insurance companies, and employers. Claim officers should encourage staff to work with in-house medical staff. Physicians should be made to feel that insurance companies are there to assist rather than threaten. Medical consultants should be utilized when a medical staff does not exist.

The Stener lesion: a new twist to Gamekeeper's thumb

Article Abstract:

Most injuries to the ulnar collateral ligament of the thumb, including some complete tears, will heal with immobilization, but some complete tears require surgery. In cases where the aponeurosis of the adductor pollicis muscle becomes pressed between the ligament ends, surgery is the only way to prevent chronic instability and weakness. This Stener's lesion can be determined by stress testing and the presence of a large mass on the ulnar side of the thumb.
