The effect of amniotic fluid on the human omental artery in vitro

Article Abstract:

Amniotic fluid does not appear to affect blood vessels. Doctors have suspected that it did and that this could be one of the causes of circulatory collapse in pregnant women with amniotic fluid embolism. Amniotic fluid embolism occurs when amniotic fluid enters the womans' bloodstream. This can have disastrous effects but doctors have not been able to determine the exact mechanism. Researchers exposed samples of arteries taken from five women having a cesarean to amniotic fluid. The amniotic fluid did not cause any abnormal changes in the arteries.

Impairment of fetal growth potential and neonatal encephalopathy

Article Abstract:

Most brain injuries in newborn babies probably occur long before birth, according to a study of 83 newborn babies. Forty-one of the babies had a brain injury at birth and 30% were below the 10th percentile of growth potential compared to only 2% of the babies who were healthy. This shows that whatever caused the brain injury also stunted their growth and must have happened long before birth.
