The experience with vaginal birth after cesarean delivery in a small rural community practice

Article Abstract:

Vaginal birth after cesarean delivery appears to be safe even in small, rural hospitals. Several studies have demonstrated the safety of vaginal birth after cesarean delivery, yet 54% of hospitals surveyed did not attempt them. The rate of vaginal birth after cesarean delivery is significantly lower in hospitals where fewer than 1,000 infants are delivered annually than in hospitals delivering more than 3,500 infants annually. Of 67 pregnant women who had previously undergone cesarean delivery, eight were not considered eligible for vaginal birth and eight did not want a vaginal birth. Of the 51 women who went into labor, 31 delivered vaginally and 20 had another cesarean delivery. Many of the women who delivered vaginally gave birth to larger infants than they had previously delivered following cesarean section. None of the mothers died, and the one infant death was due to a birth defect not associated with labor or delivery.

Misoprostol induction of labor among women with a history of cesarean delivery

Article Abstract:

Using misoprostol to induce labor in pregnant women with a previous cesarean does not increase the risk of uterine rupture. However, women with a previous cesarean were more likely to have another one than women with no previous cesarean.

Transvaginal ultrasonographic cervical measurement as a predictor of successful labor induction

Article Abstract:

Pregnant women with a short cervix and a high Bishop score following labor induction are most likely to have a successful vaginal pregnancy. A short cervix and high Bishop score are signs that the cervix is soft enough to dilate.
