Twins and triplets: The effect of plurality and growth on neonatal outcome compared with singleton infants

Article Abstract:

Having studied one of the largest available neonatal databases to describe mortality and morbidity rates and growth in newborn infants from multiple gestations, and compared these data with data fro singletons. It is concluded that the data on a large number of twins and triplets provide reassurance that neonatal outcome at all viable premature weeks of gestation are similar to singletons.

Complications associated with peripherally inserted central catheter use during pregnancy

Article Abstract:

About half of all pregnant women who must have a peripherally inserted central catheter may experience complications, according to a study of 52 women. Infection was the most common complication, followed by cellulitis, catheter failure, pain, and blood clots. Premature labor may be a risk factor for complications arising from a peripherally inserted central catheter.

Appendicitis in pregnancy: new information that contradicts long-held clinical beliefs

Article Abstract:

In a study of 67 women who had appendicitis during pregnancy, 80% had pain in the lower right quadrant of the abdomen, regardless of the stage of pregnancy. This contradicts conventional medical opinion, which states that the growing uterus pushes the appendix upwards, so pain from appendicitis should be in the upper right quadrant.
