Tyronia alamosae and Geronimo
Article Abstract:
The Alamosa springsnail, which was listed as endangered by the Fish and Wildlife Service in 1991, lives in the historically interesting warm springs, Ojo Caliente, New Mexico. The mollusks preceded the Apache Indians in the region. The Apaches who went to war led by Geronimo were imprisoned for 27 years in Arizona. In 1911 a delegation of Apaches led by a US Army Colonel explored the Ojo Caliente to determine if the Indians should be returned there. The delegation found that the springs had gone dry, though this is highly improbable since they flow steadily today.
