The same, but different: much more can be done to encourage women from minority ethnic groups to undergo cancer screening

Article Abstract:

Nurses and other health professionals are being urged not to stereotype women from ethnic minorities and regard them more as individuals with language and cultural differences. There is a need to recruit bilingual community health educators to improve communication, particularly with regard to breast and cervical screening for women of ethnic minorities. Preliminary findings of a project involving nurses and GPs indicate that the problems encountered by women from ethnic minorities during screening procedures are exacerbated by inadequate knowledge and the perceptions of health care professionals.

Sharp practice

Article Abstract:

There are around 100,000 needlestick injuries to health care workers in the UK each year. Most injuries arise during the procedure for which the sharp is being used, with a quarter of injuries taking place after use and before disposal. Techniques for reducing the risk of needlestick injury include removing needles from syringes only when essential and using protective equipment such as gloves and aprons.
