Article Abstract:

The Occupational Medecine and Hygiene Laboratory (OMHL) of the UK Health and Safety Executive focuses on developing methods and equipment to monitor and analyse gases and vapours in the workplace and expert systems to predict hazardous effects of chemicals and processes. The laboratory has developed a simple system of passive monitoring which can be worn on a lapel as a small badge. It has also developed a user-friendly portable gas chromatograph, the Delta and 2 hand-held monitors for coal mine use. The laboratory has developed computer systems to predict the toxicity of unknown substances.
