Dennis L. Breo's reply
Article Abstract:
JAMA replies to a letter to the editor by Dr. Charles Crenshaw, author of JFK: Conspiracy of Silence, containing his observations of the wounds suffered by President John F. Kennedy in Dallas. This letter had been written in 1992, but JAMA did not publish it. The terms of the settlement of a lawsuit filed by Dr. Crenshaw and co-author J. Gary Shaw required its publication. Dr. Crenshaw claims he saw entry and exit wounds in Kennedy's throat and head which he says indicate that the president had been hit from the front by one bullet. Dennis Breo's 1992 articles, based on interviews with physicians who performed emergency care and autopsy on the president, argue that President Kennedy was killed from behind by two bullets. The reportage challenges the accuracy of Dr. Crenshaw's observations in his book.

Transcription of the HIV-1 LTR is regulated by the density of DNA CpG methylation
Article Abstract:
Chemical modification of certain DNA sites of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) may prevent it from reproducing. After infection with HIV, there is generally a two- to 10-year period before the development of full-blown AIDS. It is not known what causes or extends this period, but it is believed to be dependent on interaction between the virus and the host cell. Methylation may be one factor influencing the continued inactivity of the virus. In this process, methyl groups are added to DNA. Certain sites in the genetic structure of the virus appear to be inactivated when methylated. This prevents the virus from reproducing. However, this inactivation can be reversed by the virus under certain time-limited circumstances.
