Invasion and persistence of Salmonella in human fibroblasts positive or negative for endogenous HLA B27
Article Abstract:
Contrary to indications from experiments with mouse cells, the production of the antigen HLA B27 by human cells does not appear to affect the cell's susceptibility or response to infection with Salmonella bacteria. Human cells that were both positive and negative for HLA B27 expression were infected with Salmonella. Neither the rate of infection nor the cell's efficiency in killing the bacteria were affected by the presence or absence of HLA B27. Bacterial antigens remaining in the cell after their destruction may cause the inflammatory processes seen in reactive arthritis triggered by Salmonella infection.

Basic calcium phosphate crystals induce synthesis and secretion of 92 kDa gelatinase (gelatinase B/matrix metalloprotease 9) in human fibroblasts
Article Abstract:
Basic calcium phosphate (BCP) crystals, found in the fluid of some joints affected by osteoarthritis, appear to induce the production and secretion of destructive enzymes in connective tissue cells. Researchers treated human connective tissue fibroblasts and pig collagen chondrocyte cells with a solution containing BCP crystals. The solution induced matrix metalloprotease 9 production and secretion in the connective tissue cells, but not in collagen cells. This substance, a gelatinase, may be involved in the cartilage degeneration seen in arthritic joints.
