Treating severe bruxism with botulinum toxin

Article Abstract:

Botulinum toxin appears to be effective in treating bruxism, but it is expensive and should only be used as a last resort. People with bruxism grind their teeth, often at night while they're asleep. Researchers gave 18 patients with bruxism injections of botulinum toxin in the masseter muscles, which control jaw movement. Botulinum toxin paralyzes muscles. The treatment was effective in all patients and the effect lasted from 6 weeks to one year or longer.

Treating bruxism and clenching

Article Abstract:

Bruxism can destroy teeth if it is not treated. People with bruxism clench and grind their teeth, often at night while they are asleep. This can cause dental enamel to wear down 10 times faster than normal. Occlusal splints can be used but they must be sturdy. The splint should be worn every night and even during the day if needed. Middle-aged patients may need tooth restoration. This would probably involve crowns and implants, and even complete dentures.
