Trust betrayed

Article Abstract:

Research has revealed the greater vulnerability of disabled people to abuse. The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children surveyed 34 adults who had experienced abuse in childhood. Seventeen were able-bodied and 17 were mentally or physically disabled. Many disabled accepted abuse as no different from medical intervention. Report author, Helen Westcott suggests greater professional sensitivity and sex education are required for the handicapped.
