Use of an algorithm for administering subcutaneous heparin in the treatment of deep venous thrombosis

Article Abstract:

An algorithm is presented that allows physicians to achieve therapeutic levels of heparin in patients with deep venous thrombosis in a very short time. The algorithm instructs physicians to administer the heparin based on body weight and adjust the dose six hours later based on a measurement of the activated partial thromboplastin time. Using this algorithm, researchers achieved therapeutic levels of heparin in 87% of 70 patients within 24 hours and in 99% within 48 hours. Deep venous thrombosis is the formation of blood clots in the large veins in the legs. Heparin prevents blood clot formation.

Comparison of two forms of the anticlotting drug heparin for treatment of blood clots in the legs

Article Abstract:

Low-molecular-weight heparin appears to be as effective as regular heparin for treating deep vein thrombosis (DVT). DVT occurs when blood clots form in the veins of the legs. The advantage of using low-molecular-weight heparin is that it can be given as an injection rather than an intravenous infusion.

Gangrene of the leg during warfarin treatment in a patient with cancer

Article Abstract:

The anticoagulant drug warfarin can cause excessive blood clotting in some patients with deep vein thrombosis, leading to gangrene in the leg. This may occur because the drug causes the formation of substances that promote blood clotting.
