Utilization review companies get mixed review
Article Abstract:
A survey of 79 utilization review (UR) firms by the General Accounting Office raises questions about the qualifications of the reviewers employed by these firms. In most instances registered nurses perform first-level reviews. But in some cases, records technicians with only a few hours training and licensed practical nurses are delegated the task, and the latter are even able to make decisions. The report has motivated Rep. Ron Wyden to call for more rigid UR standards.

Pact to slow spread of data on Illinois doctors
Article Abstract:
The Illinois Hospital Assn (IHA) and the Illinois Health Care Cost Containment Council have agreed to limit the release of data containing information about physician costs and admitting practices. The IHA had made the state-collected data available, via its COMP-data system, to prospective members who wanted to compare themselves with other hospitals. State officials were worried that this practice would raise confidentiality issues and lead to economic credentialing.

Maine cracking the 'black box' of utilization review
Article Abstract:
Utilization review companies in Maine will have to disclose their review criteria on Apr 1, 1993, or lose their licenses. The information is being collected to help the state mediate coverage disputes. The American Medical Association, which believes that nondisclosed review guidelines may not be clinically sound, was disappointed that the state did not mandate full disclosure. In addition, states such as Maryland and Hawaii already have some form of disclosure rules.
