Ways of reducing the waiting times for patients in A&E

Article Abstract:

Considerable attention has been given recently to ways of reducing waiting times for people attending hospital accident and emergency departments. However, research has indicated that patients are actually more concerned about service quality and about being treated with respect, than about how long they have to wait. This indicates that accident and emergency departments must always focus on linking quantitative measures with quality, an area which does not feature in the comparative performance measures contained in the 'Patient's Charter.'

The life-savers

Article Abstract:

Multidisciplinary teams of paramedics, advanced trained nurses and doctors are responsible for the treatment of seriously injured patients in the UK. It is essential that accident and emergency staff liaise with wards to ensure that a bed is available for such patients. There also needs to be liaison with community health services, as planning for discharge needs to begin on the day of admission because there is heavy demand for beds.
