Bill James, baseball statistician and writer and Boston Red Sox adviser

In 1977, while employed at a pork-and-beans plant, the baseball pundit Bill James, born on October 5, 1949, self-published 'The Baseball Abstract', a photocopied, treatise on the game. Within few years James' annual abstract had become an unlikely best seller, and over time his approach to baseball caught on not only with readers but also with players, coaches, and officials making him perhaps one of the most influential baseball writers.
