Raoul Cedras justified the coup d'etat that he launched against Haitian Pres. Jean-Bertrand Aristide by claiming that he only wanted to preserve democracy. However, Cedras' leadership was short-lived because the international community pressured him to step down by imposing sanctions against Haiti.
