Viktor Chernomyrdin was appointed prime minister by Russian President Boris Yeltsin in December 1992, replacing Yegor Gaidar. In contrast to his initial efforts, Chernomyrdin began to support and continue the economic reforms initiated by Gaidar. He served under Yeltsin for 5 years before he and his Cabinet was dismissed on Mar 23, 1998.
