Collins at the urging of her son and the Democrats of Chicago, IL ran for Congress to fill the seat of her husband who was killed in a plane crash. She retired after 22.5 years, the longest House tenure for a Black woman. Among the bills she sponsored was the Gender Equity Athletics Disclosure Act.
