Women's world
Article Abstract:
Women with learning disabilities are susceptible to gender discrimination. They are often subject to more control than men so that learning opportunities are limited. Nurses should appreciate that lack of opportunity rather than a learning defficiency may account for limited ability. Women are also disadvantaged by behavioural expectations. For example sterilisation is considered a possible option for sexually-aware women but not for men. Nurses should challenge stereotyped female roles to prevent discrimination.
