Gregory Rebassa, translator of literature, has translated into English some of the most beloved and best-known Latin American literary works, and he is widely regarded as one of the most important translators of 20th-century literature. Rabassa, a Distinguished Professor of Hispanic Languages and Literatures at Queens College, in New York City, was awarded the first PEN medal in translation in 1982.

John Negroponte, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations

John Negroponte began his career in 1964 as political officer in the U.S. embassy in Saigon. He has received the president's meritorious service award in 1983 and 1987 and an honorary doctorate from the Adamson University in Manila, the Philippines.
