Fortune Magazine's myth of black business power
Article Abstract:
The special issue of the Fortune magazine entitled 'The New Black Power: A Generation of African Americans is Seizing Real Power in the World of Business,' asserts that blacks are now part of the business elites. However, an examination of the Fortune's top 500 companies would show that there are 12 companies under black management which is small in comparison to those owned by whites. A 1995 Census report also reveals that the revenue of the 620,000 black-owned businesses in 1992 was a measly $52,000. The new black business powerhouses include Magic Johnson and Leroy Keith.
