Body odor
Article Abstract:
Physiologic processes or diseases may produce body odors. Urination, defecation, and secretions from the skin, sex organs, and saliva produce odors. Products produced by sweat glands are the major source of body odor. These secretions create a personal scent that is affected by dietary, social, genetic, cultural, and racial factors. Perfumes, soaps, and other personal hygiene products can mask or alter these odors. Wounds, infections, tumor secretions, and other disease processes can produce distinctive body odors. Antibiotic treatment may help alleviate odors produced by some of these sources. Bad breath may be a symptom of gum disease, poor dental care, or gastrointestinal disorders. Some psychiatric patients, people with seizure disorders, and others may perceive odors that cannot be smelled by anyone else.
