Imagining India
Article Abstract:
Indian novelist and journalist Nayantara Sahgal, niece of Jawaharlal Nehru, likens India to a novel in that it comes out of an emotion felt and acted out, it sprawls and it contradicts itself. The national movement that brought about Indian independence began as a state of mind, imagination being the only way for Indians to escape from the European philosophy which exalted western man as God's great creation. Literature in India's older languages has an important role to play as the globalisation of markets hurls Indians into another western version of reality.
