Article Abstract:
There are two major catalogs for stamp collectors in the US. They are the Scott Catalogue and the Minkus Catalogue. Novice and seasoned collectors alike can find helpful information in both. They can dispel confusion on such topics as numeral cancels, which resulted from a historical procedure.

The joy of collecting precancels
Article Abstract:
In 1847, the postmaster at the then Wheeling, VA post office precancelled stamps and then canceled them a second time on the letter. Other local post offices followed suit. These covers are now rare collectors items. Eventually the US Postal Service also began to precancel stamp issues.

A review of the postal history of Little Rock, AK reveals that in 1864 postage stamps were sold at discount to merchants in the hopes of serving more people. The economic success of the venture is discussed. Today, stamp dealers may sell stamps at a discount to collectors.
