Are our wide-to-tele zooms as good as they can be, or have their compact size, light weight, and variable aperture cost us in terms of optical quality?

Article Abstract:

Remarkably good buy in a macro lens. And don't tell me your zoom's just as good

Article Abstract:

Improvements in cameras, films and zoom lenses have allowed zooms to replace single-focal-length lenses for most purposes, but a macro lens still outperforms a zoom at close range. The 100mm f/3.5 Vivitar Macro offers excellent performance for $150-$170.
