The US Power Squadrons offers the public and its members an annual Boating Course, which includes 11 advanced Grade and Elective Courses. Six of these Elective Courses, which concern cruise planning, engine maintenance, marine electronics, sail, weather and instructor qualifications, are described.

The US Power Squadron's Boat Smart course provides boaters with several lessons on aids to navigation. These lessons are useful because they help in ensuring safety in the face of possible maritime danger. Navigation aids also help in locating positions by the use of charts.
