Don't blame the hobby for bad purchases

New stamp collectors may become disgruntled when they try to sell their collections and find out they are not very valuable. Many new collectors will not follow the advice of knowledgable philatelists. The aim of a hobby should be to give enjoyment to the collector, not merely be an investment.

It all started with a lady in London

Article Abstract:

A detailed history of stamp collecting in the West is recounted. It began with the 1840 issue of the UK Penny Black. The first US commemorative may be the memorial stamp issued one year after the death of Abraham Lincoln. Many anecdotes are recounted about stamp collecting history.

Some tips on identifying U.S. grills

Article Abstract:

During part of the 18th century grill-like marks were pressed into stamps during the printing process. Although the marks were made from the front, they are more easily seen from the back of the stamp. Tips are given on identifying these grill markings.
