The easiest way to move around the deck holding a heavy rod and reel is to point the rod straight at the fish that is at the end of the fishing line. This was demonstrated by an incident wherein the black marlin that was just hooked was rampaging to get off it.

Stand-up fishing

Popular but incorrect stand-up fishing techniques can strain the lower back. Fishing rods should be short enough to fish at an angle without putting strain on the lower back. Fishermen can lean against the weight of the fish with customized harnesses.
