Wanted: a good $500 computer
Article Abstract:
Several companies are developing low-cost, low-end 'Internet appliances' or 'Network Computers' (NC) designed for use primarily as World Wide Web terminals and claiming to aim at a price point of $500. Oracle is the leading champion of the technology, but IBM, Sun Microsystems, Wyse Technology and others are also working on prototypes. Reducing the price to $500 might require vendors to offer so little functionality that the machines would have little appeal. Processors will be inexpensive non-Intel devices with built-in video and sound, and the machines will not have disk drives. Some will have flash RAM for storing personal data. Graphical capabilities will be limited. An NC will be heavily dependent on its Internet connection and will be severely limited by its connection speed. Vendors like to talk about cable modems and ISDN, but these technologies have not yet arrived in many homes.

Total Distortion
Article Abstract:
Electronic Arts' $64.95 Total Distortion is an over-the-top rock and roll game for music-video lovers. The adventure takes place in The Distortion Dimension, an alternate universe where music is the core of everyday life. The goal is to collect video footage of the Dimension's various music stars and piece together music videos using the Total Distortion Video Sequencer. Players get to select sound effects, music, background sets, foreground sets and middleground images. There are hundreds of possible clips that can be mixed and matched. The ultimate goal is to make videos that are impressive enough to sell to Distortion's three video producers. The game includes numerous puzzles, Guitar Warriors and other elements that try to keep players from obtaining fresh material for their videos. Total Distortion provides a wealth of tunes, ranging from pop to grunge to punk.
