Horsedrawn mail in Delaware
Article Abstract:
The first horse-drawn mail service to rural areas in Delaware started in 1896. Lightweight wagons were developed that enabled the horses to move faster and could withstand bad weather. Rural delivery by horseback continued into the 1970s in some regions.

The Lewisville, PA, post office opened in Feb 1848, but an official post office building was established in 1975 by residents of the city. The efforts of the town to obtain delivery service are described.
