Eighteenth century explorer Louis Antoine de Bougainville led an expedition that visited Tahiti, the Samoas, the New Hebrides and the Solomons, collecting important scientific information. He was honored in a 1988 series of French stamps.

Etienne Brule was a 17th century French explorer who is portrayed on a commemorative stamp in Canada. He lived with Ottawa Indians and was the first white man to discover northern Michigan.
