People wishing to keep their collections intact, may bequeath them to libraries or museums. But this may not happen. The valuable Miller collection given to NYC library was partially sold when the library needed funds. Holding stamps also removes them from the market for advanced collectors.

Article Abstract:

Two of the most common misconceptions by stamp collectors are discussed. Mint is often though to mean, never glued. However some stamps are issued without glue. Mint really means to be in the same condition as when sold by the post office. Another misunderstood term, hinge, is discussed.

Early postcards and some advice on hinges

Article Abstract:

A history of the growth of the postcard industry fueled by need is recounted. Not all early postcards were written on paper as no law banned leather, aluminium or other materials. Tips are offered to help the new stamp collector with hinging, that is mounting stamps correctly in albums.
