The registration mold has good edges that eliminate the need for the model maker or jeweler to hand-cut the perimeter.

The author discusses tips on making a simple square cushion design for cutting bright gems such as quartz, citrine and amethyst. The pattern, named Star of the Southwest, was developed using a ray-tracing software. It creates attractive facets even on stones with relatively low-refractive indices.
