Screamer
Article Abstract:
Virgin Interactive Entertainment's Screamer is a breakneck arcade-style racing game that offers excellent animation, a variety of racing venues and realistic driving experiences. Players can flip end over end, careen into walls and downshift from fifth to first at 300 mph without ever being kicked out of the race. The races involve nine other drivers on a six-track circuit. Players advance by placing in the top three in each race. Players can pick from six high-performance cars, including a Lamborghini and a Corvette. There are some unique racing options, such as a slalom course, time trials and a cone course. Screamer operates best in Super VGA on a high-end Pentium system with 12MB of RAM, but users with VGA will not completely disappointed. Screamer also scores high in the sound department with its rock 'n' roll soundtrack. The game is priced between $54.95 and $64.95.

Star Rangers
Article Abstract:
Interactive Magic's $59.95 Star Rangers receives high marks for its integration of strategic elements and action, although its hardware requirements are intensive. At first glance, Star Rangers does not appear to offer anything different from other space combat games. In fact, the game does not offer any fancy videos, big-name celebrities or character interaction. However, Star Rangers sports a high level of decision-making, which makes the player feel more vested in the game. Players are able to decide which enemy ships to attack first, which civilian ship needs the most help and how to fly the patrols. Players also have the option to fly into any base to reload, refuel and conduct repairs. Although Star Rangers is presented in beautiful Super VGA, its hardware needs are intensive. In tests, even a 90MHz Pentium with 8MB of RAM was taxed to its limits.
