Stonekeep
Article Abstract:
Interplay's $59.95 Stonekeep is an artful, elegantly executed role-playing game that succeeds in suspending players' disbelief. The swords-and-sorcery game, which took five years to develop and two more years to ship, proves to be worth the wait. Players take on the role of Drake, a young man enlisted by a goddess to uncover the lost city of Stonekeep. The game takes the player through an immense 3-D maze, consisting of 23 levels organized into 12 areas. The game is filled with traps, puzzles, locked doors and monsters. Combat involves a great deal of thought and strategy, instead of the traditional hack-and-slash techniques. The monsters are thinking creatures as well, which can be incredibly intimidating. The game offers fluid mouse-based controls, an intelligent inventory system and great automapping capabilities. However, it is Stonekeep's ability to provide an organic experience that makes it stand out.

Angel Devoid
Article Abstract:
Mindscape's $50 Angel Devoid: Face of the Enemy full-motion-video computer adventure game offers good graphics and an acceptable story line but suffers from a lack of playing time. Players maneuver a detective through a series of well-rendered environments in order to locate and confront the main villain. Users navigate using on-screen arrows and interact with other game characters with a pre-defined attitude that ranges from demonic to angelic. Angel Devoid is very intuitive and the on-screen assistant character provides important information. The video performances are generally poor and the infrequent puzzles and challenges are not prohibitively complex. Angel Devoid's 4 disc game takes awhile to load, even on a fast Pentium computer.

CyberMage: Darklight Awakening
Article Abstract:
Origin Systems' CyberMage: Darklight Awakening offers 3D action, varied game play and a very compelling storyline. It imagines a future in 2044 ruled by corporations in which the player saves the life of an 'exotic' human/feline hybrid and is resurrected as a superhero entrusted with a mysterious gem called Darklight. Each adventure is presented as a series of comic books with a personal quality generated by monologues from allies and insults from enemies. Players can make far too much cash gambling, skewing play balance, and the Super VGA mode is sluggish, but the game's multilevel structure and good sound make it strong nevertheless. CyberMage's price ranges from $55 to $65.
