Su-27 Flanker
Article Abstract:
Mindscape's $55 Su-27 Flanker flight simulation game goes against traditional flight simulation models by using the Soviet-introduced Su-27 rather than an 'F' combat jet. This game features a single-seat, multi-role model that broke 27 world aviation records in its heyday during the Cold War. It has advanced and very realistic game play set over the Crimea skies where the Ukraine and Russia are fighting over control of the Black Sea. There are three sets of up to nine missions that can be executed in 'Pilot', 'Squadron leader' or 'General' mode. The three modes execute game play as a single plane, a single plane with wingmen or as a military strategist in charge of the entire command, respectively. The game has solid texture mapping for real-looking objects and realistic movement. The overwhelming amount of controls in the cockpit can be distracting.

Fighter Duel
Article Abstract:
Philips Media's $49.95 Fighter Duel simulation game earns high marks for its smooth animation, crisp graphics and strong flight model, although it can be overly simplistic at times. Set in World War II, the game is strictly an air combat simulator. Players can select from 13 historical planes and 7 tactical scenarios. Fighter Duel is not a mission-based game. Instead, players are dropped directly into the gun-blazing fray to fight against as many as eight computer-controlled enemies. Players can implement a variety of realism factors, such as stalls, pilot blackouts, flying abilities and collisions. On the downside, each aircraft has the same cockpit and the log feature only tracks one pilot at a time. In addition, enemy planes tend to defy the laws of physics when hit, refusing to crash for implausible amounts of time.

EF2000
Article Abstract:
Ocean of America's $59.95 EF2000 simulation game is a sequel to the TFX 2000 flight simulator and boasts the newest, most advanced weapons technology ranging from radar-guided air-to-air missiles to Defensive Aids Sub System avionics. Graphics are superb, and sound effects are excellent, although both are very demanding of system resources. Effective game play requires a Pentium with a lot of RAM. Developer Digital Image Design obtained data from British Aerospace and the Royal Air Force to make the EF2000 (EuroFighter) as realistic as possible. The real plane will debut with NATO forces in the year 2000. Getting started is easy with the comprehensive manual, and there are plenty of visual effects, such as burning flak, fiery explosions, translucent smoke and visible wing damage.
