The Tokina 300mm is heavy but very fast with a 2.8 maximum aperture. The manual-focusing ring is in the middle of the lens and turns in autofocus mode which is a problem if it is touched inadvertently. It produces sharp images with some flare at the widest apertures. List price is $4,199.

The Tokina 100-300mm f/4 AF, priced at $1,325 for the Canon AF camera and $1,185 for other kinds, has excellent sharpness at various apertures and focal lengths. Flare was controlled well except at the 200mm focal length. Ghost images were evident at 100mm and 200mm in backlight.

The Tokina 300mm f/4 APO AF telephoto lens produces sharp images at all apertures. The focusing ring is easy to grip, but fine manual focusing is difficult. The lens has legible meter and foot markings. The price of a Canon mount is $1,800; a Minolta or Nikon mount costs $1,600.
