Steve and Donna O'Meara have spent 20 years tracking volcanic eruptions. They are not geologists, but ordinary people who love volcanoes. They travel the world to observe volcanoes, but also to help villagers in the area escape danger. They are more successful at this than the bureaucrats who come in to warn them because they can approach them on a more human level.
