Sales of SLRs have been decreasing since 1981. The sales then reached a high of 2.6 million cameras. In 1993, is estimated that only 850,000 will be purchased. In contrast, sales of autofocus cameras have reached 13 million. Technological innovations that match SLRs made the autofocus ones popular.

Debunking the fairytale that SLR viewfinders show you what you get

The viewfinders of single-reflex lens cameras show less area than the recorded picture in many cases, thus photographs may be different than what was envisioned. Bulk film processing can further change pictures as more of the picture is cut. One way to check print areas and viewfinders is given.
