Windows 95 shareware
Article Abstract:
Readily available shareware programs enhance and augment Microsoft's Windows 95 operating system features. Shareware is generally available online and requires payment only if users decide to keep the program. Many applications are not particularly useful but some will increase user productivity and make Windows computing a more enjoyable event. Users are advised to obtain a quality virus protection program because shareware downloaded from the Internet may be contaminated with bugs. PKWare's PKZip data compression software makes files smaller and easier to manipulate while Nico Mak Computing's WinZip operating system utility gives users a convenient GUI for managing files. McAfee Associates' VirusScan for Windows 95 is an excellent example of virus protection software and Viracker Software's LogoChange for Windows 95 allows users to add images to Windows 95's shutdown and startup screens.

A better browser?
Article Abstract:
Six comparable Web browsers are reviewed. Netscape Communications' Netscape Navigator dominates the Web with its overwhelming market share and sets the industry standard. It is constantly on the 'bleeding edge' with support for new HTML extensions, but may not be best for average users since organizing its bookmarks is still a chore, and there are some bugs. Sun Microsystems' HotJava is the first browser to fully support the new Java programming language Sun developed. It currently runs only on Windows 95 and Sun's Solaris OS and is rarely used except for experimental purposes. Microsoft's Internet Explorer aims to leverage Microsoft's overall domination of the software market. Like Netscape, it takes advantage of some proprietary HTML extensions. Spry's Spry Mosaic is a licensed, enhanced version of the original NCSA Mosaic and supports HTML 3.0 and secure transactions.

Merger mania
Article Abstract:
Gaming software is a fiercely competitive market, with numerous small companies fighting for shelf space and user loyalty, and a shakeout is inevitable. Most experts expect that computer-game firms will have to be either major players or allied with major players to survive in the mass market. Microsoft and Electronic Arts are among the few firms large enough to survive independently, but Sierra On-Line, Spectrum Holobyte, Interplay, Mindscape and others are striking deals and buying up other companies to become big firms. Company officials say the mergers will benefit customers because larger companies can devote more resources to making better products, but the reality will be closer to that of the music industry, with the mainstream controlled by a few mega-corporations and niches filled by small 'independent' labels.
