Article Abstract:
The first item in Bartels' collection of shelf and table clocks was a flat top mantle clock which he exchanged for model ships. His father fanned his interest in the items as he took the teenage Tom to auctions, flea markets and junk shops. Shelf clocks crafted in Connecticut in the 19th century make up most of his collection.

Suffer the little children to come unto me: never too young to collect

The shopowners should teach youngsters the value of collecting and rather than discourage them by sign such as "No Kids Allowed." The success of Logan Antique Mall's booth, which sells cards and comic books, shows that young collectors can make up a potential market for cheap items.
