One family in Athens, GA, designed their pool to make it appealing even during the winter months. Native stone paving and a tinted bottom, for instance, replace the conventional white-concrete decking and blue water while the pool's curving shape is similar to a natural pond.

The ECHO farm in Fort Myers, FL, holds experiment in subtropical agriculture. ECHO distributes seeds of tropical plants to Third World countries through its volunteers. The nonprofit organization was founded by businessman Richard Dugger after visiting Haiti in the 1970s.
