Taking root in cyberspace
Article Abstract:
Information from the American Horticultural Society (AHS) will soon be included in the Virtual Garden site from Time Life, Inc, on the Internet's World Wide Web. The plan is in response to a recent computer survey that indicated widespread interest among members in obtaining gardening information from the Internet. The AHS home page will feature magazine excerpts, fact sheets, a directory of horticultural professionals, book service and advice from experts. A list of gardening sites available on the World Wide Web is included.

Lousewort, cursed but undammed
Article Abstract:
Kate Furbish discovered Pedicularis furbishiae in northern Maine in 1880 but not until the 1970s did it come to general notice. Furbish's lousewort lives only along the banks of the St John River, usually on north-facing slopes, and it depends on the river's unusual pattern of ice flow to clear space for new plants. In the 1970s a proposed dam that would have flooded much of its territory and affected the rest was scuttled in part by a public outcry to save the plant. Now, it is threatened by broader habitat degradation.

Lively clivias
Article Abstract:
Clivias are some of the most beautiful flowering plants in the world. Native to Southern Africa, they can be found in the wild their and in gardens around the world. Potted clivias can survive indoors and will bloom for as long as a month at a time. They are somewhat temperamental, however, and can be very expensive.
