Architect A.J. Downing advocated gardens as a beautiful accent to any house. He himself designed the gardens of wealthy landowners, public institutions and gardens. His designs in both housing and gardens was often overdone and kitsch, but his advocacy of gardens inspired everyday homeowners to garden.

Vegetable garden pests may be common, but there are natural controls that prevent them from destroying produce. Garden refuse has to be cleared in the fall, followed by tilling the soil 6-8 inches deep. A cotton netting cover over new plants prevents pests from laying eggs.
