Wholesale hardware dealers have often been criticized because they seem to provide special and expensive favors and treatment to the large, highly successful retailers and ignore the newer or smaller hardware stores. Hardware wholesalers might avoid these huge costs and be even more successful by establishing a training and franchise system for new businesses. Whereas the rate of failure for new businesses is high, the rate of failure for franchises is extremely low.

Bob Sheridan of St. Petersburg, FL's Skyway Hardware, for example, has used his leadership ability to turn paint into a highly successful niche for the store. Skyway encourages its employees to make their presence felt.
