Exterior finishes come in two varieties, film and penetrating. Film finishes are best used on furniture that not be exposed to direct sunlight, while penetrating finishes are good for outdoor furniture. Pigmented stains and water repellant are also discussed.

Four methods for applying wood stain are described. The excess can be left on or wiped off, or the wood can be partially or completely sealed before the stain in applied. Each method results in a different appearance.
